Sydney Wins the OSBRC Family Stay at Great Wolf Lodge!

April 21, 2025

Burlington, ON – On February 18th, the Ontario Schools Battery Recycling Challenge randomly selected Sydney of Pauline Johnson Public School in Burlington, as the winner of this year's Family Day prize draw for a stay at Great Wolf Lodge in Niagara Falls!

Sydney's school is participating in the Ontario Schools Battery Recycling Challenge, competing against 100 other schools in the Province to see which school can recycle the most batteries. The purpose of the challenge is to teach students and their families how to handle and store batteries at home. The Challenge also provides a convenient way for the school community to recycle them when they no longer hold a charge.

During the Challenge, students sign up to complete Student Missions for a chance to win prizes. Students who completed all five missions by February 18th were entered into this special draw for a family stay at Great Wolf Lodge.

The Ontario Schools Battery Recycling Challenge started on the first day of Waste Reduction Week in October and runs until May 9th, 2025. The top schools in the Province will walk away with a share of a Provincial prize pool with a portion of the proceeds donated to SickKids Hospital Foundation on behalf of all schools at the end of the Challenge.

About the OSBRC

The OSBRC is a recycling challenge for elementary and secondary schools across Ontario. The purpose of the Challenge is to teach students and their families how to safely handle batteries and how to recycle them. Students, teachers, and their families have recycled more than 13.4 million batteries since the program started in 2014. The Challenge has also awarded $102,962.08 to schools, students, and the SickKids Foundation.

OSBRC schools can download resources, such as lesson plans, that tie into the curriculum. They can also download various posters, activity worksheets, and more to keep recycling at the forefront during the year.

The batteries recycled during the Challenge are processed at Environmental 360 Solutions Ltd. in Port Colborne. E360S sorts the batteries by chemistry and then recycles the alkaline batteries using its patented recycling technology. 100% of each alkaline battery is reused and no part of the battery ends up in the landfill.

Environmental 360 Solutions uses a mechanical process that separates all of the components of a primary battery so they can be properly recycled. The recovered materials are used to make new products saving our earth's finite resources and the energy needed to mine them from ore.
