Niagara Region Embraces Innovative SMART Battery Recycling Solution

Thorold, Ontario – Environmental 360 Solutions Ltd has introduced a state-of-the-art outdoor battery recycling container at the Niagara Region Headquarters in Thorold, at 1815 Sir Isaac Brock Way, just outside the Campbell East Foyer.
"This innovative recycling container was built to last. It can withstand harsh weather conditions, and it's equipped with advanced sensors to monitor the internal temperature of the container. The sensors also track the volume of batteries deposited. Once full, the container triggers an automatic alert to Environmental 360 Solutions Ltd for a pickup," said Andrew Horsman, VP of Sustainability at Environmental 360 Solutions.
Outdoor battery recycling containers will offer people living in Niagara Region around-the-clock access to battery recycling.
“We are happy to be working with Environmental Solutions 360 Ltd. to be one of the first municipalities in Ontario to pilot this new battery collection technology at Niagara’s Regional buildings. Using the new ‘smart’ collection containers will help the Region make battery recycling more accessible, ensure safety and improve efficiency at no extra cost. Funds we receive from batteries collected at Regional buildings are used in support of the United Way, so any opportunity to increase batteries collected and improve efficiency is win-win, with more batteries diverted from landfill and more funding for a worthy charitable organization.”
In late 2023, Environmental 360 Solutions Ltd acquired the assets of Raw Materials Company, a local company that was the leading force in recovering resources from end-of-life batteries in Canada. The acquisition included a comprehensive collection network across Canada, enhanced logistics capabilities, and cutting-edge battery processing facilities in Port Colborne, Ontario.
The pioneering design of the smart outdoor battery recycling container is the culmination of two years of development and draws on over 20 years of experience in battery recycling.
